Essential Reading for Forex Trading Beginners: Your First Week from Scratch

Forex trading is the act of buying and selling currencies of different countries. You profit by predicting the rise or fall of one currency against another. For example, EURUSD = 1.0850 means 1 Euro can be exchanged for 1.0850 US dollars. If you think the Euro will rise, you "buy" EURUSD; if you think it will fall, you "sell."

First Week Plan

Don't rush into depositing real money! Here is a suggested schedule for a beginner's first week:

  • Day 1: Download MT4/MT5 and register a demo account
  • Day 2: Familiarize yourself with the platform interface, learn to open charts and switch timeframes
  • Day 3: Understand basic terms: Pip, Lot, Spread, Leverage
  • Day 4: Learn the basic patterns of candlestick charts (K-lines)
  • Day 5: Understand the concept of support/resistance levels
  • Day 6: Attempt your first trade (0.01 lots) on the demo account
  • Day 7: Review every trade from the week and record your insights
  • Core Concepts You Need to Understand

  • Pip: The smallest unit of change in an exchange rate. If EURUSD moves from 1.08500 to 1.08510, that is a change of 1 pip
  • Lot: 1 standard lot = 100,000 units of currency. Beginners should start with 0.01 lots (micro lots)
  • Spread: The difference between the bid and ask price, which is the broker's source of income
  • Leverage: A tool that amplifies your trading amount. 100x leverage means you only need $10 in margin to control a $1,000 position
  • ⚠️

The most important advice: Trade on a demo account for at least 2-4 weeks first. Only consider depositing real money once you confirm you can consistently profit. 90% of beginners lose money in the first 3 months, mainly due to a lack of discipline.
